  1. Do you think the women gossiping have a right to do so about Janie? What deeper meaning can cause such attitude in people?

Characters:
  • Janie Starks: 40 year old woman who comes back into town; Tea Cake’s lover.
  • Phoebe Watson: Best friend of Janie; she hates the town for judging Janie.
  • Pearle Stone: Resents Janie for coming back into town unannounced.
  • Lulu Moss: One of the gossipers on Phoebe's porch; Pearls friend.
  • Tea Cake: Janie’s lover who supposedly stole money from Janie.
  • Pearl’s Husband: Doesn't really care for Pearl.

Summary:
In the beginning, there is a woman that is made to be known as Janie Starks. She is arriving in a southern town in Florida, from the Everglades. Her friend Phebe, has local residents on her porch who criticize Janie as she passes through the town. They gossip about her attire, physical beauty, and her past lover, Tea Cake. Phoebe stands up for Janie and leaves the women on her porch to go see her friend and offer her food. She mentions people’s speculations, which leads Janie to telling Phoebe her story and why she isn’t happy living in Everglades.

    Good study questions (we will be working more on developing discussion questions together as a class for future posts). Nice job on character descriptions. Summary is clear and concise (formatting still a little weird.) Love the illustration!

Chapter 17-18 Discussion Questions: What is the significance behind Tea Cake wanting to impress/please Mrs. Turner? Why might have Janie assimilated to life with Tea Cake after his abuse? Discussion Questions Ch. 17-18

Why might have Janie assimilated to life with Tea Cake after his abuse? Has she or has she not assimilated to life with him? Why/why not? She might have stayed with Tea Cake after his abuse because she knows that he doesn’t usually hit her so he might not do it again. She has assimilated life with Tea Cake because she is already older and she maybe might as well just stay with Tea Cake. If you were Janie, what would be a motivation to stay with an abusive husband? Some motivation would be because they are economically stable, which is something that really attracts some people who want to have a stable life but come from a poor family. Another motivation would be because she loves who they were before they became abusive. She probably hopes that they will return to be the same man that she came to know, so she stay with him.
