In the beginning, there is a woman that is made to be known as Janie Starks. She is arriving in a southern town in Florida, from the Everglades. Her friend Phebe, has local residents on her porch who criticize Janie as she passes through the town. They gossip about her attire, physical beauty, and her past lover, Tea Cake. Phoebe stands up for Janie and leaves the women on her porch to go see her friend and offer her food. She mentions people’s speculations, which leads Janie to telling Phoebe her story and why she isn’t happy living in Everglades.

- Pearl’s Husband: Doesn't really care for Pearl.

Good study questions (we will be working more on developing discussion questions together as a class for future posts). Nice job on character descriptions. Summary is clear and concise (formatting still a little weird.) Love the illustration!
