Summary:
These chapters sum up Janie’s newfound relationship and how she is feeling unsure about it. She loves the feeling that Tea Cake gives her, and she even tells Phoebe that Tea Cake treats her how she wants to be treated. He is nothing like Jody and Janie dislikes the fact that when she finally decides to go out in public with him people just want to judge her and compare Jody and Tea Cake. Janie is at a point in her life when she is finally doing things her own way. Before she did things the way her grandmother wanted to, then she did them the way Jody wanted them to be done. Now she is living her best life and is ignoring all of the negativity. She is planning on selling the store and leaving town to marry Tea Cake to start her life. Others share with Janie that they feel as if she is moving on too fast and did not grieve long enough but Janie reveals that she does not feel sad about the loss of Jody so why should she continue to beat herself up about his death. Although people may think Janie is being played Janie is happy, and throughout the entire book she has been miserable. Phoebe still tells Janie to watch her back with her young lover, but Janie laughs because she has found her happiness in him.
