  1. What are Janie’s options in the beginning of chapter 7? Should she stay or leave? What hardships would she encounter if she chooses to leave.
  2. Why do you think Jody says all those remarks about Janie’s appearance?
  3. Do you agree with how Janie talked to Jody in the store in front of people? Why or why not?
  4. Did Jody have the right to hit Janie in public? Why or why not?
  5. If you were Janie how would you handle Jody and all his comments? Why?

Summary:
As time passes, Janie and Jody’s relationship grows colder. Janie starts to notice how Jody’s physical appearance and mobility has changed, but doesn’t say anything to him because he seems to have noticed the same thing. Although she doesn’t say anything to him, Jody starts to judge her on her appearance to make up for his change due to old age. Jody compares her actions to her age because she is also growing older. However, one day, Janie made a mistake in the store when she cut a plug of tobacco. She was made fun of the mistake at first by the customer, but then Jody went far and also started making fun of her by verbally abusing her. Janie thought that was enough abuse and she talked back to Jody. She told him how he has also changed with time and insulted him on how he looks like when he is naked. After letting out her thoughts, Jody felt very powerless because there were citizens of the town sitting on the store’s porch, who had listened to their outbursts. As a result, Jody got extremely angry at Janie, slapped her very hard, and ran her from the store.

Chapter 17-18 Discussion Questions: What is the significance behind Tea Cake wanting to impress/please Mrs. Turner? Why might have Janie assimilated to life with Tea Cake after his abuse? Discussion Questions Ch. 17-18

Why might have Janie assimilated to life with Tea Cake after his abuse? Has she or has she not assimilated to life with him? Why/why not? She might have stayed with Tea Cake after his abuse because she knows that he doesn’t usually hit her so he might not do it again. She has assimilated life with Tea Cake because she is already older and she maybe might as well just stay with Tea Cake. If you were Janie, what would be a motivation to stay with an abusive husband? Some motivation would be because they are economically stable, which is something that really attracts some people who want to have a stable life but come from a poor family. Another motivation would be because she loves who they were before they became abusive. She probably hopes that they will return to be the same man that she came to know, so she stay with him.
