Chapter 8
Discussion Questions:
- Do you think Jody was acting childish because he did not want to eat Janie’s cooking or speak to her?
- Was Janie in the wrong for telling Jody he was going to die then criticizing their marriage right after? Or was she right for finally speaking he mind no matter of the time?
- What do you think is the symbolism behind Janie taking off her head scarf when Jody died?
- Why do you think Janie yells out the window that Jody has died?
- What do you think Janie will do with her life now that Jody is not around?

Summary:
Joe and Janie’s married has gotten worse. It has no longer endured, and is broken. Joe isn’t sleeping with Janie in the same bedroom, as he goes his own way and sleeps away from Janie. His illness’ condition has definitely worsened and Janie tries to care for him. Janie also wants him to see a doctor for the worsening conditions, but Joe’s stubborn personality hinders him from receiving help from both Janie and the doctor. Janie though, does end up getting a doctor for Joe, and the doctor says it’s too late, since Joe’s kidneys have definitely failed. He will die out. Janie stays with Joe throughout this time, and cares for him as he slowly worsens. She tells him about how unhappy their marriage was, while Joe can’t wrap his head around the idea that he is already dying. As soon as he passes away, Janie pities him and remembers that the marriage didn’t bring them the happiness they thought it would.
