Summary:
Jody has died and Janie is mourning her loss. After two months, she has several men coming up to her and telling her that she should be careful since she is a widow. One man named Ike Green, even tells her to watch who she will marry. Janie is surprised by this because at the time she hasn’t even thought about getting remarried yet. Once six months pass, Janie is feeling liberated by the things she is able to now have that Jody is gone. She likes the liberation she receives and tries to enjoy it.
Everyone in the town went to a baseball game, including Ezekia. Then, in comes one man named Vergible Woods (aka Tea Cake). He goes to buy cigarettes at Janie’s store and they both eventually start flirting. Everyone in the town comes back to the store after the game to hang out and talk. At the end of the night, Tea Cake stays with Janie and helps close the store up. He then walks her to her house and says goodnight after he has dropped her off.
