Summary:
In this chapter, Janie and Joe take the train back to Florida. They meet two men who are named Lee Coker and Amos Hicks who live there. Amos Hicks is attracted to Janie, and is teased by Coke because they both know that he can not snatch a woman like Janie away from Jody. Meanwhile, Janie and Jody ask to see the mayor, but soon discover that there is none, so Jody takes action. He then hired Coker and Hicks to build the store that he wants. Once the store is opened, Jody is named mayor of the town. Due to the fact that Janie is Jody’s wife, she’s asked to give a short speech, but Jody disagrees with this idea (thinks that wives shouldn’t give speeches). His opinion angers Janie, but she does not make a big deal out of it. As mayor, Jody is making beneficial changes to the town (i.e the big gathering to install a street light). Soon, Jody and Janie’s house is finished and everyone is envious of them because it is bigger and nicer than theirs. Not only did the town and Jody grow apart, but so did Jody and Janie because Jody is a workaholic. Although many of the people are not happy with Jody, nobody would dare step up to challenge him and his authority.
