Summary:
Janie got married to Logan Killicks in Nanny’s parlor. Since the beginning, Janie was unsure about her marriage because she doesn’t love Logan and she thinks that all marriages should consist of love. However, people such as her grandmother, say that she should marry him because of his vast amount of land. After about three months, Janie still doesn’t love Logan in any way, so she goes to Nanny, who is at Ms. Washburn’s house, for advice. Nanny greats her with much energy, but as Janie doesn’t respond with much emotion, Nanny suspects Logan is either abusing her, or she’s pregnant. Janie then tells her of her unhappiness and in return, Nanny tells her that love has nothing to do with marriage; therefore, she should deal with it because Logan keeps Janie economically stable. Nanny doesn’t respect Janie’s values, and prays to God for help with Janie. Afterwards, Janie goes back home to her unhappy marriage, and Nanny dies shortly after. The chapter ends with Janie’s realization that marriage in return for land, money, or anything materialistic, doesn’t assure one’s happiness, which is accompanied by love in a marriage.
