  1. Do you think Jody was acting childish because he did not want to eat Janie’s cooking or speak to her?
  • Yes because he doesn’t want to receive treatment from his own wife. He should accept the help she wants to give because she may stop trying after a while.
  • He was childish because even though he was the one that hit her, he feels like the victim after Janie told him something for the first time.

  1. What do you think is the symbolism behind Janie taking off her head scarf when Jody died?
  • It may symbolize how Janie is done with her past, which Jody is apart of.
  • Just like the headscarf was covering something that she found beautiful about herself, taking it off may symbolize her freedom and that it is her time to shine now that she can show her true beauty to everyone around her.

  1. What do you think Janie will do with her life now that Jody is not around?
  • She will probably go out and be with her friends. She will also probably start talking more with the townspeople and enjoying time with them.
  • Maybe she will go out with guys or just stay a widow.

Mrs. Turner is very clearly prejudiced. How does Janie react to her? Why does Mrs. Turner like Janie? Chapter 17-18 Discussion Questions: What is the significance behind Tea Cake wanting to impress/please Mrs. Turner? Why might have Janie assimilated to life with Tea Cake after his abuse? Discussion Questions Ch. 17-18

Why might have Janie assimilated to life with Tea Cake after his abuse? Has she or has she not assimilated to life with him? Why/why not? She might have stayed with Tea Cake after his abuse because she knows that he doesn’t usually hit her so he might not do it again. She has assimilated life with Tea Cake because she is already older and she maybe might as well just stay with Tea Cake. If you were Janie, what would be a motivation to stay with an abusive husband? Some motivation would be because they are economically stable, which is something that really attracts some people who want to have a stable life but come from a poor family. Another motivation would be because she loves who they were before they became abusive. She probably hopes that they will return to be the same man that she came to know, so she stay with him.
