  1. Do you think Nanny is being ignorant to how Janie is feeling in her new marriage? Explain.
  • No, she’s just being inconsiderate (putting her feelings before Janie). Nanny knows the situation but refuses to see the true emotions that lie behind what a marriage is.
  1. What are your thoughts between Janie and her husband's relationship? Explain.
  • They’re hostile.
  • Her husband is trying hard and Janie is not meeting him in the middle.
  • It’s a fake marriage where they both don’t love each other. It’s kind of like a bandage of Nanny’s past adversities.
  1. Do you think Janie has grown in maturity from what you read in chapter one?
  • A little because she was naive at the beginning by thinking that love could grow from a marriage and work out alright; in reality, love has to be there already for the marriage to work.

Mrs. Turner is very clearly prejudiced. How does Janie react to her? Why does Mrs. Turner like Janie? Chapter 17-18 Discussion Questions: What is the significance behind Tea Cake wanting to impress/please Mrs. Turner? Why might have Janie assimilated to life with Tea Cake after his abuse? Discussion Questions Ch. 17-18

Why might have Janie assimilated to life with Tea Cake after his abuse? Has she or has she not assimilated to life with him? Why/why not? She might have stayed with Tea Cake after his abuse because she knows that he doesn’t usually hit her so he might not do it again. She has assimilated life with Tea Cake because she is already older and she maybe might as well just stay with Tea Cake. If you were Janie, what would be a motivation to stay with an abusive husband? Some motivation would be because they are economically stable, which is something that really attracts some people who want to have a stable life but come from a poor family. Another motivation would be because she loves who they were before they became abusive. She probably hopes that they will return to be the same man that she came to know, so she stay with him.
