  1. Do you think that Jody is letting the title of being mayor get to his head? Is it okay for him to not let Janie sit on the porch step because the “trashy people” sit there?
  • We think that he is letting the title of mayor get into his head because he forgot where he came from. Although he is the mayor, he acts like he is higher than everyone else.
  • It is not okay because he is trying to dominate her by trying to control her actions and her whereabouts.
  1. After hitting Janie, do you think Jody feels bad/guilty? Do you think he will do it again?
  • He might feel guilty at first, but then his guilt will fade as time goes on because he wants to control Janie, even if it means that he has to hit her. He might do it again in the future since he seems to be getting more and more controlling over Janie.
  • I do not believe that Jody feels bad for hitting Janie at all, if anything i feel like he believes she deserved it because in his eyes he is always in the right. I believe he will do it again until Janie is submissive.
  1. After there has been examples of who is the dominant in the relationship and losing the spark in their private life, do you think Janie will leave Jody (or even vice versa)?
  • I think that Janie will leave Jody soon because when her needs were not satisfied with the first husband she left him.
  • Janie might leave Jody, not vice versa because Jody has a job to do as the Mayor and he won’t ruin the image that people already have of them. Janie might leave Jody because she has a lot of courage since her first marriage.

Chapter 17-18 Discussion Questions: What is the significance behind Tea Cake wanting to impress/please Mrs. Turner? Why might have Janie assimilated to life with Tea Cake after his abuse? Discussion Questions Ch. 17-18

Why might have Janie assimilated to life with Tea Cake after his abuse? Has she or has she not assimilated to life with him? Why/why not? She might have stayed with Tea Cake after his abuse because she knows that he doesn’t usually hit her so he might not do it again. She has assimilated life with Tea Cake because she is already older and she maybe might as well just stay with Tea Cake. If you were Janie, what would be a motivation to stay with an abusive husband? Some motivation would be because they are economically stable, which is something that really attracts some people who want to have a stable life but come from a poor family. Another motivation would be because she loves who they were before they became abusive. She probably hopes that they will return to be the same man that she came to know, so she stay with him.
